The project has also served as a form of art therapy and mediation. “Something that’s really special about doing the cranes is, because we sit all together, everybody begins to talk and begins to feel like this community,” Estandia Zeevaert said. “It was a fun way to get everybody involved.”Įlyssa Hamilton, a peer support specialist and volunteer coordinator at the café, said once one member would learn how to fold a crane, they’d teach someone else. “It happened organically,” Grinnell said. Grinnell started folding the origami paper the café had on hand, and the project grew from there. It was introduced to the café by member Maggie Grinnell, who had previously worked on a similar project with Mental Health Partners. The nonprofit, which focuses on addiction and trauma recovery, adopted the goal of folding 1,000 paper cranes earlier this summer. It’s very beautiful, because it represents the humans that we are, the humanity that we have.” “Every member has done a crane, I think,” said Maria Estandia Zeevaert, a peer support specialist at the café. And, after roughly three months of constant folding, there are more than 1,000 of them. They come in all colors, sizes and textures. Origami cranes are an international symbol of hope and peace, and that symbol is on full display at Recovery Café Longmont.Īt the café, paper cranes dangle from the ceiling and hang next to pillars, windows and doorways.
